Enormous Numbers Anticipated With Two Broods Coming This Spring

Cicada Invasion: Billions of Insects Expected to Emerge in Illinois

Enormous Numbers Anticipated with Two Broods Coming This Spring

Prepare for the Arrival of Brood XIII and XIX

Experts are anticipating an enormous emergence of periodical cicadas in Illinois this spring, with billions of the insects expected to appear. This year, two broods of cicadas, Brood XIII and XIX, will emerge in the Midwest and Southeast in their first dual emergence in over a century.

Periodical cicadas are unique insects that have a 13- or 17-year life cycle. They emerge from the ground in massive numbers during their specific emergence year and known geographic location. In Illinois, there are members of five cicada broods, and the map shows the three broods that are relevant for 2024.

The emergence of Brood XIII and XIX is expected to be particularly significant, as these broods are known to produce enormous numbers of cicadas. Experts believe that the combination of these two broods could lead to the largest cicada emergence in Illinois in decades.

The cicadas are expected to emerge in late May or early June, and they will remain active for several weeks. During this time, they will feed on tree sap and mate. The male cicadas will also produce a loud, distinctive buzzing sound to attract females.

While cicadas are generally harmless to humans, they can be a nuisance. Their loud buzzing can be disruptive, and their shed exoskeletons can create a mess. However, cicadas are also an important part of the ecosystem, and they provide food for birds and other animals.
